About this piece
Natural dye block print fabric coloured with madder root (manjistha), the plant dye that gave old Sanganeri and Ajrakh cloth its deep, earthy red. The jaal trellis is hand-printed with alum mordant, then developed in a madder bath — a two-stage process no screen print imitates. Colour varies gently between lots and mellows beautifully with age. 44 inches wide, per meter.

How to wear
This is heirloom cloth: quilt tops, festive kurtas, structured jackets and dupattas that improve for a decade. Wash cold and separately with a gentle pH-neutral detergent — harsh alkaline soaps dull plant dyes. Dry in shade; a slow mellowing of tone over years is the nature of madder, not fading.

Screen pigment washes out in patches within a few washes. Madder, mordant-fixed into the fibre, shifts evenly and slowly toward softer terracotta over years of use — collectors consider that patina the point.
Why is this pricier than pigment-printed meters?
Two extra stages: mordant printing, then a controlled madder dye bath, plus higher failure rates in natural dyeing. ₹799/m is the honest cost of the real process.
Will the red transfer to skin or other garments?
