About this piece

Dabu indigo fabric is mud-resist hand block print: the boota motif is stamped in a paste of clay, lime and gum, then the cloth is dipped in a natural indigo vat, leaving the pattern in reserve. Made in the Sanganer–Bagru craft belt outside Jaipur, every meter varies slightly with the vat — the proof it is not screen print. 44 inches wide, sold per meter.

How to wear

Indigo dabu makes exceptional kurtas, wrap dresses, unlined jackets and patch-quilting. Natural indigo crocking is normal at first — wash alone in cold water for the first two or three washes, after which it settles into the soft, lived-in blue that indigo is loved for. Never bleach; dry inside-out in shade.

Why does my meter look slightly different from the photo?

Natural indigo is vat-dyed in batches; depth shifts a little between lots and even along a bolt. That variation is the honest evidence of dabu hand work — uniform 'indigo' is usually screen-printed navy pigment.

Will indigo rub off on other clothes?

A little, initially — that is crocking, natural to real indigo. Wash separately for the first two or three washes and avoid white upholstery contact until then; it stabilises permanently after.

Is dabu the same as Sanganeri print?

They are sister crafts of the same Jaipur belt. Sanganeri is fine direct printing on white; dabu is Bagru-tradition mud-resist over dyed grounds. We label each honestly rather than blurring them.
